FLYING SQUIRRELS

Have you seen Northern Flying Squirrels (Glaucomys sabrinus) in your woodlot?  I always wondered  if there were any in my forest, but thought there was no way to be sure.  However, a couple of weeks ago, I put up a suet feeder for the Hairy, Downy and Pileated Woodpeckers.  I set up one of my trail cams to photograph the birds.  What a surprise when I discovered that there were Flying Squirrels coming to the feeder at night.  I've been using trail cams to survey for wildlife in my woodlot for the past year.  So far, I've had Bobcat, Fox, Coyote, Deer, Raccoons, Skunks, and Red,  Grey and Flying Squirrels show up on the photos and videos taken by my trail cams.  Great way to survey for wildlife.

Neat observation Bev, thx for sharing . Likely they are more common than we realize, Bob Bancroft wrote an informative article on "Night-Gliders"for Saltscapes some time ago. From that article: "Forestry equipment operators report groups of flying squirrels streaming out of holes as their machines grapple, cut and lean trees over. This is one reason these gentle creatures are rarely seen. Repeatedly cut forests have few, if any, old trees with hollow centres where the squirrels can take shelter to overwinter or raise their young." https://www.saltscapes.com/people-culture-section/people-culture-category/2196-night-gliders.html
