The HFC was created in 2016 to provide a voice for the many, many Nova Scotians who have a great affinity for our woodlands but who have never been treated as ‘stakeholders’ by the governments and officials who make forest policy in this province.
From the beginning ‘action’ has meant giving voice to concerns about the way in which our forests are being exploited and the need for stewardship. We have done that through conversations with politicians, journalists and other forest interests; through letters and articles in the press; through sharing information with our coalition partners and through public demonstrations. Our goal has been to inform the public and to persuade policy makers that change is essential.
We have had some success, but we are still a long way from achieving the ecological forestry that Professor William Lahey has urged the government to introduce on Crown lands and to encourage on private lands. In fact, as climate change looms as a hard reality, the need for more
vigorous action has become increasingly urgent.
You can help in many ways.
Simply by informing yourself about our forests, the way we use them and how we can ensure their health, and by discussing forest issues with friends and neighbours, you will be building public opinion on these matters and helping to create a consensus that the politicians cannot ignore.
You can, of course, be very active in our campaign: speaking to politicians, writing and appearing in the media, taking part in our organization and
participating in our activities.
In this section of our website we present information that we hope will be useful as you work with us.
