Nova Scotia's official Natural Resources Strategy, The Path We Share, says the province will reduce clearcutting on Crown lands to no more than 50% of the total by 2016. Instead, over 90% is being clearcut. While it may be the best practice in some circumstances, the huge preponderance of clearcutting is a result of market pressures, not wise forest management. The deleterious effects are well documented and long lasting. Just take a read of some of the documents posted here.
HFC has produced maps that reveal dramatic changes in Nova Scotia Forests; largely the disappearance of Acadian Forest and older stands due to clearcutting. |
